Saal digital Photobook
I’m sure many of you have seen the Saal digital marketing campaigns on FB advertising a free £100 voucher to try one of their professional line photobooks in return for feedback and a review of the product. I chose a 30x30cm professional line book with 50 pages which came to approx £99. In the end after trying to whittle down my image choices I ended up adding a few more pages which added to the cost and I chose to go with a nice plain black Leatherette cover.
In terms of paper choices they offer a Matte paper and a Glossy paper options. I chose the Matte paper option as I didn’t want the pages or images to show reflections etc in certain lighting conditions. The pages do however have a sheen, look and feel to them which is very similar to the Canson Baryte fine art semi gloss paper I use for some of my fine art prints. I must admit It was not what I expected from the matte paper however it is very nice quality and I have no complaints about it's final look as my images look wonderfully printed within the book (personal opinion of course)regardless of whether it is the Matte or Glossy option.
In terms of the Software required to build and design the book, it does need to be downloaded from the Saal website and it does ask permissions to access image folders etc. The software itself was easy enough to use once I figured out how I wanted to display my images within the books layout although I never really utilised many of the options and features available so I can't give much more of an opinion than that.
I wanted my photobook to be simple, clean and minimal much in the same vane as my photography but in a way that represents my photographic style (I think I achieved that somewhat). The overall quality of the final product is very good and I can see it being a great alternative to an album for small weddings and elopements as well as a way of showcasing my landscape photography journeys and progression in the future.
